Government Digital Service

The Government Digital Service (GDS) is the digital centre of government. We serve the public, central government departments, and the wider public sector.

GDS is part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). DSIT accelerates innovation, investment, and productivity through world-class science, ensures that new and existing technologies are safely developed and deployed across the UK, and drives forward a modern digital government for the benefit of its citizens.

GDS is responsible for setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital government, set out in the blueprint for a modern digital government. A long-term vision for digital public services, a six-point plan for reform, and the role of the new digital centre of government.

Our priorities are to drive a modern digital government, by:

  • joining up public sector services
  • harnessing the power of AI for the public good
  • strengthening and extending our digital and data public infrastructure
  • elevating leadership and investing in talent
  • funding for outcomes and procuring for growth and innovation
  • committing to transparency and driving accountability

We are home to the Incubator for Artificial Intelligence (I.AI), the world-leading GOV.UK, and at the forefront of coordinating the UK’s geospatial strategy and activity.

GDS lead the Government Digital and Data function/profession, and champion the work of digital teams across government.

The relationship between Government Digital Service and Government Digital and Data

GDS is the UK government’s central digital team and leads the Government Digital and Data function, fostering collaboration to build necessary digital skills across civil servants to transform public services.

GDS sets digital standards, develops capabilities, provides expert advice, and establishes strategies to ensure government digital services are user-focused, efficient, and innovative.
